Introduction to Figure Skating: 2 Reasons Why Figure Skating is a Sought After Sport!

Introduction to Figure Skating

NHTC is excited to have recently re-launched our Introduction to Figure Skating class – courtesy of the talented Julie Jury Dunlop!

Julie is the owner/founder of Winning Edge, and is a welcome addition to our coaching staff. With 38 years in the industry, Julie could easily tell you her reasons why she has a passion for figure skating – but we’re here to offer these ‘2 Reasons Why Figure Skating is a Sought After Sport!’.

2 Reasons Why Figure Skating is a Sought After Sport: How it Started, How it’s Going

Figure skating first originated in the late 1700s – as described by Britannica…

A Treatise on Skating (1772) by Robert Jones, an Englishman, is apparently the first account of figure skating. The sport had a cramped and formal style until American Jackson Haines introduced his free and expressive techniques based on dance movement in the mid-1860s.

Since then, figure skating has come a long way. It has turned into a well-respected competitive sport that many flock to for a variety of reasons – 2 of which include:

1. Artistic Display

The artform involved in figure skating is a notable feature within this rewarding sport. It offers a space that allows athletes to develop artistically, creating movement to music and generate a skill that goes beyond fitness or competition.

2. Confidence Booster

Acquiring a life skill that can bolster confidence is something your child can take with them throughout life. And when it comes to figure skating; this non-contact sport helps develop performance skill and build self-confidence at an early age.

Introduction to Figure Skating

The Introduction to Figure Skating class is now being offered at our Academy Rink, and as described on our programs page

This program is for skaters transitioning out of our Learn to Skate program (or a similar program) that have an interest in learning skills related to Figure Skating. Figure Skating to be taught will include turning and edge skills; proper hand and leg stroking position; jumps, spins, choreography and artistic interpretation will be learned.

If this sounds like a sport your child may thrive in, we are here to support that. Alternately, if you feel as though your child is better suited for Girls Hockey – we have that too!

NHTC is passionate about each ice-centric sport we offer, and our coaches are equally as passionate about the sport they choose to be a part of. We look forward to sharing Coach Julie’s expertise through our Introduction to Figure Skating class!
